Cells of yeasts adhered in corn grains and the storage perspective for use as probiotic BABT

Yeasts were applied to corn grains, containing 16 or 20% moisture, at concentrations of 1 and 2%. The cellular viability was assayed at 0, 15, 30, 90 and 110 days. The cellular viability did not differ statistically among the treatments up to 30 days of storage, with the median viability of 89.10%. The average viability found at 90 days (72.20%) was lower than in the first three storage periods. After 110 days, the average viability was 61.14%. In conclusion, since yeast cells were viable up to 110 days in storage on corn grains, these can be used as a vehicle for the application of yeast as a probiotic.

Characterization of fusion products from protoplasts of yeasts and their segregants by electrophoretic karyotyping and RAPD Rev. Microbiol.

In order to characterize fusion products from yeast protoplasts and their segregants, with important features to the wine making industry, electrophoretic karyotyping and RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) were utilized. Electrophoretic karyotyping was performed by the CHEF ("contour-clamped homogeneous electric field electrophoresis") method, which allowed the detection of chromosomal band complementation in fusion products and the presence of patterns of both parental and intermediary strains in segregants. By utilizing two primers, an amplification pattern of DNA fragments was obtained. While fusion products (diploid) showed a pattern of complementary bands, segregants showed bands of either parental strains or even intermediary bands

Traditionally, the cultivation of Pleurotus sajor-caju is performed on different composted and pasteurized agricultural residues. The objective of this study was to investigate whether traditional composting and pasteurization processes could be replaced by washed and supplemented (mineral or organic) sugarcane bagasse. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficácia de aditivos químicos e inoculantes bacterianos na inibição da produção de etanol, na diminuição das perdas de MS e na melhoria da digestibilidade in vitro de silagens de cana-de-açúcar. Sugar cane silages are characterized by extensive yeast activity, alcohol production and great dry matter - DM - losses. Better knowledge of the fermentation process is fundamental to the development of efficient ensilage techniques for this forage. This study evaluates temporal changes in chemical composition, DM losses and epiphytic microflora in sugar cane silage. Mature sugar cane, variety RB835486 (12 months of vegetative growth), was hand harvested, processed in a stationary chopper and ensiled in 20-L plastic buckets provided with valves for gas release and a device for effluent collection. Utilization of sugarcane Saccharum officinarum L. silage is increasing in Brazil but intensive ethanol production during fermentation reduces forage quality. This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of additives on fermentation and aerobic stability of sugarcane silages produced in minisilos. Treatments were (fresh basis): untreated silage (control), urea (5.0 g kg-1), sodium benzoate (1.0 g kg-1), potassium sorbate (0.3 g kg-1), Lactobacillus plantarum (1 x 10(6) cfu g-1), and Lactobacillus buchneri (3.64 x 10(5) cfu g-1). Bacillus and Lactobacillus are bacteria that usually contaminate the ethanolic fermentation by yeasts and may influence yeast viability. As microorganisms can be killed by ionizing radiation, the efficacy of gamma radiation in reducing the population of certain contaminating bacteria from sugarcane must was examined and, as a consequence, the beneficial effect of lethal doses of radiation on some parameters of yeast-based ethanolic fermentation was verified. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of heifers fed sugarcane silages produced with and without additives. Thirty-two Holstein heifers were randomly assigned, in a block design, to evaluate rations (46% silage; 54% concentrate; 12% crude protein) containing silages treated with (fresh basis) urea (0.5%), sodium benzoate (0.1%) or Lactobacillus buchneri (3.64x10(5) cfu g-1 ). Inoculation with L. buchneri improved daily gain (1.24 vs. 0.94 kg day-1 ), and the addition of benzoate resulted in better feed conversion (7.6 vs. 9.4 kg of dry matter per kg of live weight), in relation to the untreated silage (control). Três linhagens de levedura da espécie Saccharomyces cerevisiae, sendo duas floculantes, das quais uma não produtora de sulfeto de hidrogênio, foram avaliadas para se verificar seus desempenhos, sob parâmetros cinéticos, bem como a formação de compostos secundários na fermentação do caldo de cana-de-açúcar, destinado à produção de aguardente. O acompanhamento da cinética fermentativa mostrou melhores resultados de eficiência de fermentação, fator de conversão de substrato em etanol e velocidade específica de crescimento pela linhagem floculante IZ 987, que foram de 89,9%, 0,46 g.g-1 e 0,0996 h-1 respectivamente. Thermolysed and active yeast to reduce the toxicity of aflatoxin Scientia Agricola

Aflatoxins are hepatotoxic metabolites produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus on a number of agricultural commodities. This research was carried out to evaluate the ability of thermolysed and active Saccharomyces cerevisiae to attenuate liver damage caused by aflatoxin. Diets were prepared containing 0 aflatoxin; 400 mug kg-1 aflatoxin; 400 mug kg-1 aflatoxin plus 1% of dehydrated active yeast, and 400 mug kg-1 aflatoxin plus 1% of thermolysed yeast.
